new world
"there is a part of year that is renowned for bringing things to life. the warming weather, tempting animals from their homes. the snow having melted, not to come back for a while, the grass can finally breathe and it can thrive. and in its lead comes budding flowers, and the regrowth of leaves, and later there’s fruit that hangs high in the trees.
i was born of a single seed, of which sprouted in the spring. if it doesn’t make sense to you, well, neither does it make sense to me."
the birds that morning had perched themselves all around, on every branch of every tree, and so many birds there were that many had taken their place on the ground. the birds, they seemed to know something was up, and so with their knowledge came the curiosity of other forest creatures. squirrels arrived at the scene, then deer, then a great old brown bear who was so gentle that he scared only a couple animals off.
the animals stood in a circle, watching what the forest had never witnessed before: it was a large budding flower in the center of a clearing. the flower, of which sat in the grass without any stem (it looked much too heavy for any normal stem to hold), was this fiery red color at its base and a pinker color at the top. like dragon scales, the petals looked.
the thing was much too big and much to vibrant for this forest, of which was a luscious deep green but not much of anything else. now, this flower had been there for a long while. already spring’s cool winds and rain storms were coming to an end. only recently, however, had the flower grown this large, and only recently did it seem to shake as times.
today, well, the flower didn’t have just the occasional wobble. instead, it constantly rocked from side to side, and the outermost petals had begun to peel back.
so the animals had gathered, and now hundreds of beady eyes watched as the flower came to a stop, and its petals outstretched. inside the flower was revealed a small creature, curled up and only barely breathing before it took in its first bit of fresh air it’d ever experienced.
opening its eyes, and lifting its head, the animal sat up, and the flower’s petals laid flat on the ground. the animal sat, turning its gaze in circles as it took in every stare upon it.
slowly, the surrounding creatures came to recognize the scent of this new animal. it was a kalon, a species that hadn’t naturally inhabited this forest in a long, long time. but this kalon was something special. the antlers, the hint of sweetness in his aroma, his colorless eyes. the animals were confused, as he looked to be as well.
he stood, and stepped off the flower that already was spotted with brown.
it was then that the birds noticed that the air was silent, this was a welcoming that nobody wanted. so began the chirp of one bird, and the tweet of another, until their voices melded together and each individual tune fell into place to create a song.
the other animals left it to the birds, and wandered off. the kalon cautiously followed in their suit, adventuring the forest with little knowledge of the world or where he was, or even who he was. but he would know soon enough.
